The Danish Grand Départ cities had a special role during today’s victory ceremony of the 108th version of the Tour de France. After the race finish on Champs-Élysées the Danish Tour cities received the Grand Départ trophy. The ceremony marks that the next start of the Tour de France will be Grand Départ Copenhagen Denmark, which features three stages across Denmark in 2022.
After the winners of this year’s Tour de France were celebrated on the podium on Champs-Élysées, the Chairman of Grand Départ Copenhagen Denmark, Lars Weiss, received the Grand Depart Trophy from Région Bretagne and race director Christian Prudhomme on the podium.
“Next time the world’s largest cycling race starts – it will be in Denmark. It is so amazing! From now on the many millions of tour fans, will look to Denmark for the next Tourstart. I cannot wait to show our cycling country in 2022 – it will be a celebration for all of Denmark and for cycling fans all over the world”, says Lars Weiss, Chairman of the Board of Grand Départ Copenhagen Denmark and Lord Mayor of Copenhagen.
It’s a perfect match: Next year, one of the world’s greatest cycling nations welcomes the world’s greatest cycling race. Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, hosts The Grand Depart along with four other Danish cities. Cycling is a part of the Danish DNA, and Copenhagen has been named the best cycling city in the world. Therefore, Denmark is guaranteed to deliver a truly unique setting for the start of the Tour de France in 2022.
A Danish delegation participated in the trophy ceremony, which in addition to Lars Weiss, also included mayors and representatives from the other Danish tour-cities as well as the Danish Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs.
From the fall of 2021 the Grand Départ trophy will be biked around Denmark in a yellow cargo bike. The trophy will visit the Danish Tour de France-cities, where it will be exhibited as part of a Tour de France-exhibition. First stop will be in Sønderborg on the 17th of August 2021.
