Handball: Men’s EHF Euro 2014 in Denmark: Two months and counting down

With two months to the Men’s EHF Euro 2014 in Denmark preparations are well underway. 73 area managers have been trained and the ticket sale is impressive.

Denmark is easy to go to and it is easy to get around. Now there is an excellent opportunity to go Denmark and get some great experiences with world class handball. Hotels are ready to welcome spectators from all over Europe, venues are top tuned and the preparations for the Men’s EHF Euro 2014 are going very well. The area managers have been trained and around 1200 volunteers have been recruited from local handball clubs in order ensure smooth staging of the event.

The interest in handball in Denmark is immense and the Men’s EHF Euro is guaranteed to fill up every single playing hall and create a maximum interest from the media.

Denmark, Norway and Sweden have a long and a strong tradition for handball as well as Germany just south of Denmark has. The three Scandinavian countries are represented in the tournament. Denmark has a clear strategy to host handball championships and has so far also attracted the IHF 2015 Women’s World Championship and the IHF 2019 Men’s World Championship the latter together with Germany.

“By combining our sporting culture, passion, experience and know-how we will ensure that the 16 participating teams, spectators, media and all of the 49 EHF member countries are invited to a handball reunion in Denmark,” says Per Bertelsen, president, Danish Handball Association.

Men’s EHF Euro 2014 will be staged form 12th of January to 26th of January 2014 in four host cities with 16 participating nations:

Aalborg, Gigantium (Preliminary)

Group B: Spain – Iceland – Hungary- Norway

Copenhagen, Broendby Hallen (Preliminary)

Group D: Croatia – Sweden- Belarus – Montenegro

Aarhus, NRGi Arena (Preliminary, main)

Group C: Serbia – France – Poland – Russia

Herning, Jyske Bank Boxen (Preliminary, main and final)

Group A: Denmark – Czech Republic – FYR Macedonia – Austria

Denmark is defending champions. Men’s EHF Euro 2012 was staged in Serbia. The tournament was won by Denmark over Serbia.

Men’s EHF Euro has been organized since 1994 and is staged every two years. Denmark won bronze in 2002, 2004 and 2006. In 2008 Denmark took the gold medals.

Men’s EHF Euro 2014 is the first European Championship on Danish soil ever and the first finals since the World Championships in 1978.

Danish Handball Association is hosting the Men’s EHF Euro 2014 for the European Handball Federation. Sport Event Denmark partners the event.
